[edit] Description

The Bruegel Tarot is a 78-card deck that was based on the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a famous 16th-century painter from the Low Countries (present-day Belgium and the Netherlands). Inspired by Bruegel's painting Netherlandish Proverbs, each card also has popular sayings and allegories as a theme. Because of this, the backgrounds are particularly detailed.

Interestingly, the Major Arcana has a monochromatic color scheme, with the central figures highlighted in full color. Justice is numbered VIII and Strength is numbered XI.

As one progresses through the numbered cards of the Minor Arcana, these become increasingly detailed, as each card contains its number of Swords, Wands, Coins and Cups and the same number of people. The suits are also linked to the four seasons:

  • Swords are connected with spring.
  • Wands are connected with summer.
  • Coins are connected with autumn.
  • Cups are connected with winter.
