[edit] Biography

Niki de Saint Phalle (October 29, 1930 – May 22, 2002) is a famous paintress and sculptor.

De Saint Phalle was born in France, but spent her childhood in New York. She became a model and, at the age of 17, married an American writer. She returned to Paris in the fifties, where - after a mental breakdown - she started painting as a form of therapy. Visual arts would become her greatest passion. In 1955, she started collaborating with Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, whom she later married (after her divorce).

De Saint Phalle especially gained publicity because of her Shooting Paintings and afterwards because of her Nanas. When she moved to Toscany, Italy, she worked for more than a decade on her Tarot Garden. After Jean Tinguely's death, she moved to California, where she passed away in 2002.
