[edit] Description
The Haindl Tarot has non-traditional imagery and is strongly influenced by the Crowley-Harris Thoth Tarot. Creator Hermann Haindl drew upon his knowledge of Qabalah, Runes, I Ching, and his experience living with Native Americans to produce a deck that is colorful and penetrating study in humility and reverence for nature. There's a very complicated system of correspondence at work that bears serious study: each of the Majors has been given Qabalistic, runic and astrological designators. And the Minor Arcana, hexagrams from the I Ching. In the Minors, Haindl opts for Thoth-like decorative pips and each suit is identified with a specific culture. The courts of the Wands correlate to Hindu India specifically; Cups to Celtic/Nordic culture; Swords to Ancient Egypt; and Stones to Native America. Rachel Pollack wrote a two-volume companion to the deck, and later followed with a guide for readers. The central theme of this deck, as reported by Rachel Pollack, is "the renewal of the Earth - not just the material resources, but the spiritual Earth." Hermann Haindl sees the struggle against the possibility of nuclear war and threat to our planet's environment "as a spiritual struggle as well as an ecological and political one".
(n.b.) Joseph Martin's Quest Tarot is a deliberate and considered homage to this deck.
