HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: One very good, highly recommended book that gives a curriculum, and homework assignments, as well as an overview of basic Tarot History and use, also includes many things that most Tarot Books as well as Practicing Tarot Readers, either do not know or do not want other Readers and clientelle to know, and so do not disclose in their texts:
"Lady Chalice's Secrets of Tarot: A Skill Development Workbook" by Cynthia Krueger, a.k.a. Lady Chalice, (ISBN # 1-4196-4337-1), is available for a minimal price at many on-line places, including: Amazon.com, Abebooks.com, Alibris.com, BookSurge.com, BookSurgeDirect.com, Target.com, as well as many on-line book handlers who have chosen to list the book on their web sights.
This book begins with Tarot History, and then goes into the meaning of each card. This is usually where other Tarot books stop, but in this book that is only the beginning. This book continues, by discussing ethics, both good and bad, giving specific examples of what Psychics and Tarot Readers through the ages have been known to do, even things that are not ethical, in order to demonstrate and teach the reader that experienced, ethical readers actually do know these "tricks" and the novice who thinks such tricks are unknown and the use of such tricks won't be discovered should think twice about using such tactics. The book also covers how to set up a Tarot Business, from how to select and decorate a home-based Tarot Reading room, how to advertise for your Tarot Business, and what sort of image an individual Tarot Reader can project to his or her clients. The book ends by discussing how any individual can work to develop the skill and the gift of genuine psychic intuition, by giving homework assignments, and comparing how it feels to be psychic with different things most people are already acquainted with in the non-psychic world, as well as explaining how it should feel if you finally get that inner intuition; being psychic does have an emotional and gut feeling all of its own. The book encourages a new Reader of Tarot and an expert alike to experiment with all the techniques discussed in the book so that one gaines experience with every possible use of the Tarot and will recognize both good and bad ethics, and the difference between skill-only and genuine-psychic-abilities. The book also encourages the new psychic to learn the skills first and lean on some techniques as a crutch during practice until the psychic ability is developed, and even contends that until one is well-skilled, one may not be able to really feel their psychic gift at work, much like one can not feel their true ability for music or sports until one has practiced enough for the skill to become second nature, allowing the gifted ability to come forth. The book also encourages the reading of many other Tarot books, taking notes, and keeping a journal of clients, tarot spreads types, ways to track specific readings to follow prediction and outcome, and a journal that helps the reader record new meanings the cards present as they are used over the years. The book also discusses possible problems a reader might have and suggests ways to deal with things like ministerial licensing, difficult clients and how to price a reading.
This book is 139 pages, and it is a High School level text that is easy to understand. It is a "quick read" that is highly informational, all-inclusive, and interesting to read. It does not broach Tarot from a religious aspect, suggesting that any person from any walk of faith can and should use Tarot, while acknowledging that Tarot can and is deeply spiritual. It is not available in book stores at this time, and can only be purchased on-line; It presents Tarot and the skills involved from a somewhat controversial angle - Many Tarot Readers do not want their real secrets disclosed to new readers or their clients, which is why most Tarot books do not delve into the secrets revealed in this book; and clients may be offended to learn what tricks and gimmicks some readers have or do use to read the Tarot for them - but this book is above all honest and discloses everything about Tarot. It is a great book to have in your Tarot Library Collection.
The author is at least a third-generation Tarot Reader, whose grandmother read Tarot in Bohemia/Western Czechoslovakia prior to WWII, and afterwards was a very popular psychic in Bavaria, Germany. Many of the secrets revealed in the book are genuine old-world secrets, and the tone of the text is that of a relative disclosing secrets of this art to another relative "inside the family" - who is, in this case, the reader. Usually, such secrets were passed down in family circles and never disclosed to outsiders, which is why most Tarot Books do not broach such topics as this one does.
The book is "Hot Pink" and contains a picture of the author on the back, as well as a graduation certificate that is suitable for framing. The book is great for individuals to read on their own, or for a group to study together in anticipation to receiving the certificate at a graduation ceremony.
