[edit] Description
Divinities, demigods, heroes and villains from Ancient Greek mythology are depicted on the 78 Tarot cards in the popular Mythic Tarot. The Major Arcana focus on deities and heroes. Each of the suits depicts the storyline of a myth: Wands are Jason & the Argonauts, Cups are Eros & Psyche, Swords tell the tale of Orestes and the House of Atreus, and Pentacles that of Daedalus and the Minotaur. The Court cards show famous mortals from myth - for instance, the Queen of Wands is Penelope, the Page of Cups is Narcissus and the King of Cups, Orpheus. Tricia Newell's famously naif artwork, done in brilliant colours reminiscent of Greece, has an archaic force to it, well fitted to its subject-matter - raw mythology from an age before classical art.
The deck broadly follows the Rider-Waite-Smith system, but diverges from it in some points: several cards suggest different meanings from the usual RWS - sometimes drawing from other tarot traditions (e.g. Strength shows Hercules battling the Nemean lion, an image reminiscent of several Renaissance-era decks), the cards are unnumbered and there is no suggestion of kabbalistic association. The astrological associations that are made - in the Court cards - differ in part from the Golden Dawn associations. The card backs are elegant. They appear flimsy, but wear well with repeated use.
