[edit] Description
In Tarot: Cosmos in Miniature..., John Shephard argues that the Trumps and their order were designed to reflect the Renaissance conception of the universe and the cosmic hierarchy. He sees in the Major Arcana three divisions: the secular world, the spiritual world and the eternal world. Shephard goes to some length to draw connections between early Tarots (like the Visconti-Sforza Tarot) and astrological theories of the 15th century, with varied success.
(n.b. this triune view of the Majors is similar to those presented in Pollack's Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom and Place's Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination among others.)
