A significator is a card that is usually chosen or drawn to represent the querent in the reading. It is a type of focus card for the reading. If a significator card is chosen, it will often be from amongst the Court Cards; however, any card may act as a significator.

A spread may or may not have as one of its position as significator. Various methods of reading are practised, and it is at the reader's discretion whether or not to make use of a 'significator card and, if they do, how that card is added to the reading. The card can be chosen based on the seeker's appearance, astrological associations, numerology, or any number of other factors. Some readers will use the same card all the time based on the sex of the seeker, e.g., the Bateleur or Magician for a man and the Popess or High Priestess for a woman. Alternatively, the person for whom the reading in undertaken may be asked to choose or draw a card from the entire deck or a portion of the deck. A separate deck may also be used to draw or select the significator.
